The launching of Turba Tol Hol-Hol will take place through two talks. The first will take place at Cinema Porvenir (Porvenir, Tierra del Fuego) on August 16 at 17:00; and the second at the Ernesto Livacic Auditorium of the Universidad de Magallanes on August 18 at 15:00.
Participating in the event will be Carla Macchiavello Cornejo, co-editor of the book, Hema'ny Molina and Fernanda Olivares, authors and members of the Hach Saye Foundation, Melissa Carmody, director of Karukinka Park (WCS Chile), the Últimaesperanza Collective, Aymara Zegers of the Río Seco Museum of Natural History (MHNRS) and Alessandra Burotto, Executive Secretary of Visual Arts of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage.
Turba Tol Hol-Hol Tol, which means "heart of the peat bogs" in the Selk'nam language, was the project that represented Chile at the 59th Venice Art Biennale 2022, which in August of this year arrives in the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica transformed into an experimental publication.
From an eco-aesthetic vocation, the authors gave shape to the book Turba Tol Hol-Hol, edited by Carla Macchiavello Cornejo and Camila Marambio, with the design of Rosario Ureta and the coordination of Constanza Güell. In addition to setting out the axes that guided the project in Venice, the book presents new ecological models inspired by the Abya Yala - the Kuna people of Central America named the American continent thus alluding to "flowered land" or "mature land" - based on science, traditional knowledge, artistic practices, anti-colonial thought and non-hegemonic feminist perspectives.
With a view to contributing to ecocultural thinking in Latin America, new texts were commissioned to artists, scientists, writers, academics and activists, who focused their attention on the peatlands of Tierra de Fuego and the eco-aesthetics of Turba Tol Hol-Hol Tol (the pavilion). These essays are joined by the Venice Agreement, which in June 2022 brought together scientists, artists and activists for the ecological and cultural management of wetlands and peatlands on a planetary scale. It also brings together poetry from the end of the world, visual essays and an olfactory offering. This vast compilation of commissioned essays, reprints and poems features more than 50 Latin American and Caribbean authors.
